G’day from the Bureau with your national weather forecast around the country for Thursday, the 16th of October.

There’s a few things we're watching around the country tomorrow. Firstly, it'll be this low pressure trough moving through South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. Ahead of it, temperatures will be really hot — well above average — and behind it, we’ll see much cooler air. Along that trough, showers and thunderstorms will develop through parts of Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia, so watch out for those.

Through eastern and western parts of the country, high pressure will dominate, leading to warm, dry and sunny conditions. We’ll also see showers and thunderstorms across much of our tropical north.

In Queensland, warm conditions are expected right across the state, with hot temperatures in western areas and showers and thunderstorms possible through the southern inland. Temperatures will get up into the mid to high thirties. It’ll be cooler on the coast thanks to onshore flow, but still reaching the high twenties. Onshore winds will also bring showers to the north tropical coast around Cairns, with showers and storms around Cape York as well. Brisbane is looking at 26 °C and partly cloudy skies.

Down into New South Wales, high pressure is dominating, bringing fine conditions to much of the state. Watch for a few showers and thunderstorms in the northern and north-eastern parts later in the day, and possibly a late shower or storm along the New South Wales–Victoria border. Ahead of the trough, very warm conditions are expected, with temperatures in the low to mid thirties for many areas, slightly cooler along the coast due to sea breezes. Sydney is forecast to reach 28 °C and be partly cloudy, while Canberra will be sunny, windy and warm with a top of 28 °C.

Moving down into Victoria, it will be a very warm day ahead of the surface trough moving into the south-west later in the day, sweeping right across the state through the afternoon and evening. Temperatures ahead of that will be 10 °C to 12 °C above average for many locations, with showers and storms developing with the change. Expect mid to high thirties through the north and low thirties through southern parts. Melbourne will reach 31 °C before a late shower or storm — potentially the warmest day since last warm season.

In Tasmania, it’ll be warm and windy ahead of the trough system. Showers and storms will affect western and northern parts, with little if any rainfall for eastern areas. Temperatures will reach the low to mid twenties for many locations, slightly cooler along the north coast. Hobart will reach 26 °C with a late shower or storm.

In South Australia, a very warm day ahead of the surface trough sweeping across the south. Temperatures 10 °C to 14 °C above average are expected, translating to highs in the upper thirties to near 40 °C across eastern and northern parts, while the cool change will bring milder air to the coast. Showers and thunderstorms are also likely through southern and eastern areas. Adelaide will reach 29 °C with a possible shower and thunderstorm.

In Western Australia, conditions will be cooler behind the trough system. Temperatures will sit in the low to mid twenties across southern parts, a little warmer in the north with highs in the upper thirties. High pressure will dominate, keeping most areas dry. Perth is forecast to reach 25 °C.

Across northern Australia, the build-up season is now underway, bringing afternoon showers and thunderstorms through the Kimberley, Top End and Cape York Peninsula. Temperatures will reach the mid to high thirties away from shower and storm activity. Darwin is expecting showers, a possible storm, and a top of 35 °C.
