Website privacy collection notice

This notice applies when you use the Bureau of Meteorology (the Bureau) website, beta.bom.gov.au. For details about how we use, store and disclose information collected in other ways, see our privacy policy on this page.

We may collect and hold information about you when you use this website. We collect, use, store and disclose information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Commonwealth) (the Privacy Act).

Social media and privacy

We use social media channels to communicate and engage. We keep a copy of our posts and any engagement with those posts. This is necessary to meet archiving and publishing requirements.

Some posts or engagement may include personal information. For example, profile names, icons, photographs or comments. This information is handled in accordance with our obligations under the Privacy Act.

Privacy Impact Assessment register

As an Australian Government agency, we are required to carry out privacy impact assessments for high privacy risk projects from 1 July 2018. We maintain and publish a register of these assessments on this page. The register is up to date as at 1 July 2024.

Privacy policy

Purpose

The Bureau has specific responsibilities under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) including adhering to the Data Breach Notification Scheme and the Australian Government Agencies Privacy Code, which include requirements for a clear and up-to-date privacy policy.

Scope

All Bureau staff, including ongoing and non-ongoing employees, students, volunteers, contractors and consultants engaged by the Bureau, must comply with this policy. We collect and hold personal information about individuals external to the Bureau who interact with us.

Policy

This policy informs Bureau staff how information obtained will be used, stored and disclosed. Terms in italics in this policy have the meanings as set out in the Definitions section at the end of this policy.
