When we refer to the Bureau, we, our and us, we mean the Commonwealth of Australia represented by the Bureau of Meteorology.
Using images, data and other information
We aim to make our information open and reusable where possible. We make a range of material available on this website under:
- Australian Government policy and legislation, including the Copyright Act 1968, the Meteorology Act 1955 and the Water Act 2007
- collaborative, research and other arrangements with third parties.
However, we do not own all the content on this website. Not all its content is licensed for use in the same way.
Check for specific terms of use
When we don't own content or it is subject to specific terms of use, we state this on the page.
It's your responsibility to:
- check the terms of use for the content you want
- where someone else owns the content, contact them to seek permission if required.
Some of the ways we give permission is through licences, including:
- data licence agreement
- creative commons attribution licence (CC BY) – see CC BY terms of use on the Creative Commons Australia website. If the content you're using is subject to this licence, we prefer that you attribute us using the following words: Bureau of Meteorology, © Commonwealth of Australia. Licensed from the Commonwealth of Australia under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence.
Specific terms also apply to Indigenous weather knowledge and the Commonwealth of Australia Coat of Arms, name and marks, including our logo.
If there are no stated terms of use
Unless we state otherwise, you can download, copy and use our content for personal use, or use within your organisation. You must not supply it to any other person or use it for any commercial purpose.
If you would like to use our content in a different way, contact us. You cannot use the content until you get our permission.
Unauthorised use
We do not allow you to access and/or use our content in a way that:
- is unlawful or misleading
- disrupts or otherwise interferes with our site, products and/or services. This means that we do not allow you to use automated or manual techniques to hack, scrape or otherwise extract material from our site.
In this notice, we have described how you can use our content. Unauthorised use may breach the law.
If we suspect unauthorised use, we may:
- immediately end your access to and use of our content
- stop you from accessing our site, including by blocking an IP address.
We can do this without telling you, and in addition to any of our other legal rights.
Media use and attribution guidelines
The Bureau encourages media outlets and journalists to reproduce our public information and materials. Sources include:
- the News and media section of our website
- our social media channels – Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, and YouTube (this excludes content attributed to third parties)
- data and charts published on our website and other platforms referenced here, and
- content we send to media email lists.
You must acknowledge the Bureau of Meteorology as the source of this information in accordance with guidelines for the use of Commonwealth intellectual property.
How to acknowledge us
When using Bureau content that is not explicitly licensed under creative commons (CC BY), acknowledge us using one of these statements:
- 'Reproduced with the permission of the Bureau of Meteorology'
- '© Bureau of Meteorology' (at a minimum).
Spokesperson attribution
For media interviews and content with attributed spokespeople, always include:
- the name of the spokesperson
- their position title.
For example, Jane Smith, Bureau of Meteorology Senior Meteorologist.
Restricted content
Some of our content – such as radar images, high-resolution maps, and other specialised data – may be subject to a data licence agreement.
This content is not covered by general media attribution guidelines. You need a data licence agreement to:
- access the material
- reproduce or publish it in any form – for example, online, broadcast, print.

Indigenous weather knowledge copyright
Information on Indigenous weather knowledge pages variously belongs to:
- communities who have given specific permission for their information to be included on those pages
- the Bureau of Meteorology
- Monash University's Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies, and School of Geography and Environmental Science.
You can use the pages for fair dealing purposes as allowed by copyright legislation. You must otherwise have written permission to:
- reproduce, reuse or redistribute any part of the pages for any commercial purpose
- distribute any part to another party for such purposes.

Commonwealth of Australia Coat of Arms, name and marks
For information and guidelines on the use of the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, visit the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet website.
You must not use our name, abbreviation, marks, symbols, logo, social media handles and hashtags unless we expressly allow you to.
