Hello, it's Angus here at the Bureau. Happy Friday, and I'm here to talk to you about the weather forecast across the country for the weekend. And it's a fairly settled story. We've got lots of nice, fine weather around Australia this weekend, thanks in large part to these twin high pressure areas in the east, which are gradually drifting eastwards over the course of the day on Saturday. Of course, a country this big is going to have a few weather systems at play and we do indeed have a cold front arriving in the far south-west on Saturday, bringing some rain to Perth. And on the far opposite corner of the country, we also had some showers and potential for some storm activity up in north Queensland.
Let's fly around the country and we will start off in Queensland, and we could actually see a shower or two almost anywhere along the east coast. Now for most places from Mackay down to Brisbane, those showers are going to be light and fleeting. Shouldn't disrupt the day too much, but maybe will deliver 1 or 2 mm of rain. However, further north the showers could be heavier and may even come with some thunderstorms across the north tropical coast and the Cape York Peninsula. A bit of a sign of the change in the seasons as the drier months are coming to a close shortly. Inland places will be clear and fine, but quite a cool morning with single digit temperatures.
You'll be pleased to hear it's going to be dry, fine and sunny right across New South Wales, after all that rain earlier on in the week. Temperatures will start off quite chilly, as low as 0 degrees up in the mountains around Canberra, but some pleasant afternoon highs between the upper teens or the low 20s. The only shot at rain is in the far north of the state, up around the Northern Tablelands and the Northern Rivers. Just a few showers there with low rainfall totals.
A pleasant weekend lies ahead for Victoria. It's not going to be completely clear blue skies. There’s certainly some cloud around, but overall fairly settled weather. We could eke out a few spots of drizzle either up in the mountains or along the south coast, so a couple of spots might get a very small amount of rainfall, but it will not amount to much. Temperatures a little warmer than they have been after a fairly chilly week. Up to 19 in Melbourne, with 20 in a couple of other spots.
And we'll see that same warming trend across Tasmania as well. Hobart up to 17, Launceston, Swansea up to 19 degrees. Fairly pleasant weather across both the north coast and around the south-east all through the day on Saturday. There will be a few showers caught up in the westerly air flow, hitting western districts as well as up in the mountains.
Fine, clear, dry and sunny weather is expected right across South Australia for Saturday and temperatures are climbing here too. The wind is going to shift around to the north after it has been a cooler southerly through the last several days. That pushes our temperatures to the top of the teens or the low to mid 20s right throughout the state. And it's going to step up even warmer on Sunday.
Now there will be two cold fronts affecting the south-west of the country this weekend. The first of those, the entrée if you like, will be arriving in Perth during Saturday afternoon or evening. This is the weaker of the two systems, but it will bring a few showers towards the end of the day, alongside some gusty winds to Perth and surrounding areas. Just a little bit of rainfall pushing inland into the Wheatbelt, but only low totals expected there. Further north, a warm, bright, sunny day across northern WA.
And right across Australia’s tropical north, we have fine weather and clear skies and that's because we have a cooler wind change. South-easterlies, drier conditions pushing through Darwin and the Top End. That will flush out that cloud and those few showers which have been around for the past few days. Through central Australia, the sun is out although temperatures remain several degrees below average for the time of year. Alice Springs has a high of 22. Kimberley in northern WA has a fine day. Temperatures around 33 degrees at their peak in the afternoon.
And let's take a quick look at Sunday as well. This is when that second, stronger cold front arrives in the far south-west. That's likely to bring some more persistent rain into Perth and surrounding areas, as well as the risk of damaging wind gusts and severe thunderstorms. So anyone in the south-west definitely keep an eye on that Sunday forecast.
Warm temperatures and overall bright, pleasant conditions expected through central and eastern parts. We see 21 degrees in Melbourne, 22 in Adelaide, 19 Hobart, and 23 in Sydney, all a little above average for the time of year. And across the north it's looking pretty good. Those showers clear out of Brisbane but do continue further north up the Queensland coast.
