Graduate Meteorologist Program

We're the only Australian education provider to offer an internationally recognised Graduate Diploma in Meteorology that meets the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standard.

With our training and support, you'll be equipped with the qualification and skills to be part of the next generation or meteorologists at the Bureau.

Entering the program as a full-time, ongoing employee with the Bureau, you'll be paid as you complete the 10-month intensive training course. At the Bureau Meteorological Training Centre in Melbourne, you'll study:

  • foundations of meteorology
  • synoptic-scale meteorology
  • mesoscale meteorology
  • weather services and procedures.

On successful completion of the training, you'll transition into one of our operational centres, developing knowledge as you work with our experts.

Find out more about a day in the life of a graduate meteorologist, on the Prosple website (formerly GradAustralia).

Applications open in mid-2025.

Video: Are you a future meteorologist?

The Graduate Meteorologist Program is an opportunity to take your love of maths and physics out of the classroom and into the real world.
I really wanted to look for an impactful job in science where I could apply my skills that I'd picked up through the degree. And here we are. I didn't know that this was where I would be. I didn't know that I had a passion for meteorology. But I found it just so exciting. And so, I'm just so happy to be here and learning new things.

It felt very fulfilling that four years of very hard work at university was rewarded with a position like this. It's a wonderful way to apply your skills and your knowledge to real life problems and situations in a way in which genuinely delivers benefits to the whole of society and you leave work every day feeling good about the way in which you’ve been able contribute to that.

Eligibility

Australian citizens must have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in science, engineering or other field with studies in physics and mathematics. These must be from a recognised university or tertiary institution.

Copies of your academic transcripts must be submitted as part of your online application.
