About the Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific (COSPPac)
Our weather, climate and ocean services extend beyond Australia's borders. COSPPac is one of our major support programs in the Pacific.
Pacific Island countries are vulnerable to sea level rise, severe weather events and other climate impacts.
This program supports Pacific Island communities to use climate, ocean and sea level information, to build climate and disaster resilience.
Supporting climate and disaster resilience
We assist Pacific Island national meteorological services and other agencies to:
- monitor and analyse climate, ocean, and sea level data and information
- use the data and information to develop and share useful climate products and services
- communicate climate information using traditional knowledge tailored to women, people with disabilities and children.
The program builds on Australia’s long-term support for climate information services across the Pacific. It provides critical information to support planning and decision-making in key sectors, such as:
- agriculture
- energy
- water
- health
- disaster management.
Delivering climate and ocean information services
The program includes:
- Pacific sea level and geodetic monitoring – continuing a 30 year South Pacific sea level and climate monitoring project to establish high-quality data records for the Pacific region
- climate data management systems – to archive meteorological data locally in 15 countries and territories, and provide sector-specific products
- climate and ocean monitoring and prediction services that support seasonal and intra-seasonal climate outlooks
- training and communications that build capability and climate resilience, and incorporate traditional knowledge. Learn more about Coordination and communications.
